Match reports 2006-2007

Under 15's Sunday 13th May
Moreton Hall 1 East Bergholt 2
The score hides the fact that this was probably one of the most one sided games Bergholt have played this season but it also reflects Bergholt’s inability to beat the packed Moreton Hall defence.
Bergholt dominated the game from the start but were unable to capitalise on their advantage. Goal scoring chances were few as Moreton defended in numbers. When they did manage to shoot it was either wide of the mark or direct at the keeper. Moreton Hall came closest to scoring when a long ball from their keeper was collected down the right and Bedinfield just managed to head the ball clear of a Moreton forward, with the goal open. The shot, from the resulting loose ball, was cleared off the line by Ager. On 36 minutes Bergholt took the lead when Thomson headed home a cross down the right from Sparrow.  In the second half Nugent combined clearly with Willcox but his shot hit the side netting. The Moreton Hall keeper made a number of excellent saves throughout the second half. In particular he blocked Andrews goal bound shot and then somehow managed to get his body behind Nugent’s effort from the rebound. In the 50th minute Sparrow made it 2-0 with a header into the top corner from a Nugent corner. Thomson was unlucky not to make it three when his spinning shot hit the post. Andrews and Nugent also game close but once again the Moreton keeper prevailed. With 5 minutes remaining Moreton were awarded a penalty which their striker placed beyond the reach of Stone. So overall a win but not the easy one expected. Bergholt now need to beat Mildenhall on Friday to win the league.

Under 15's Sunday 6th May
East Bergholt 4 Chantry Grasshoppers 1
For this last game at Flatford Bergholt got the result they needed to maintain their title hopes.
This was a hard fought contest with both teams spurning early chances. Bergholt took the lead when Nugent rose above the crowd to head home a Thomson corner. Chantry nearly equalised when they hit the upright during a goal mouth scramble but Bergholt eventually cleared. On 25 minutes a neat passing moving saw Thomson’s right-footed shot beat the Chantry keeper to make it two. Five minutes later Bergholt were awarded a free kick and Willcox’s effort bounced just in front of the Chantry keeper and into the net. The remainder of the first half saw further chances for Bergholt. The closest being Willcox’s shot which was inches over the bar, following resolute work by Sparrow down the left. The visitors started the second half in a determined nature and were awarded a penalty after 46 minutes when Bedinfield brought down one of the opposition. Stone pulled off a superb save, diving to his right, to prevent Chantry from scoring. However Chantry did manage to get one back after 65 minutes when their striker knocked the ball in at the near post. They came close to scoring a second, this time from a corner, but again Stone was able to push the ball clear from under the ball. Bergholt made the game safe in the 65th  minute when Thomson scored from a Nugent cross.

Under 13's Wednesday 2nd May
Claydon 3 East Bergholt 3
This was the rescheduled match following the postponement earlier in the season. Although an away game for Bergholt this was actually played at Flatford. The game summed up Bergholt’s season: careless defending allowing the opposition to score combined with poor finishing at the other end - this season’s goal difference is 21 compared to 73 last season. Welham (2) and Barwick were the Bergholt scorers but Welham should really have scored 5 or 6. Perhaps it was end of season fatigue (or politeness) but Bergholt, especially in the second half, allowed Claydon numerous free headers in the middle of the pitch. For some players this was their last game for Bergholt and we wish them well for the future. If Bergholt want to improve next season they will need an accomplished striker - too many chances were wasted this season. Also they should select the team on ability and pace rather than size.

Under 15's Sunday 29th April (KO Cup Final)
East Bergholt 2 Melton St Audrys 1
Bergholt went one better than last year’s final coming out winners against league rivals Melton St Audry in this hard fought contest.
In the early stages of the game both sides had chances to take the lead. A through ball from Thomson saw Aalders effort well saved by the Melton keeper. At the other end Stone pulled off a fine diving save to prevent Melton from scoring. Minutes later Colbeck had make a lunging clearance to knock the ball over the ball to prevent an easy scoring opportunity for Melton. Sparrow’s shot, after hard work down the Bergholt right, produced another excellent save by the Melton keeper. On 34 minutes Thomson, broke free of his marker, to meet an Andrews corner and head home at the near post to give Bergholt the lead. Two minutes into the second half Bergholt extended their lead when a 25 yard Willcox free kick hit the crossbar and rebounded into the goal. He was unfortunate not to score a second when his shot, this time from the right, hit the bar. In the 60th minute the referee adjudged that a Bergholt defender had pushed a Melton player, although this decision appeared to come as a surprise for both teams. The ensuing penalty was neatly put away resulting in an exciting final 20 minutes with both teams having goal scoring opportunities. Determined defending and tenacious work by the midfield saw Bergholt emerge victorious. This was
a true team effort with all squad members doing their bit and all should be congratulated on their performances.

Under 13's Wednesday 25th April 2007
Felixstowe and Walton 2 East Bergholt 3
A large squad was available for this, the penultimate game of the season. It was expected to be a relatively easy game as St Johns had beaten Felixstowe 11-0 a week earlier.
Bergholt started strongly with several shots just off target. On 20 minutes Bergholt really should have scored after hard work by Barwick set Bambridge up with an open goal but the resulting effort was, somehow, wide of the mark. Three minutes later Bergholt did take the lead when a header from Barwick hit a Felixstowe defender and was deflected into the net. Felixstowe equalised in the 25th minute after Bergholt displayed some of the worst defending of the season. Despite numerous opportunities Bergholt failed to clear the ball. Just before half time Bergholt regained the lead when, man-of-the-match, Barwick rounded the Felixstowe keeper to knock the ball into the empty net. The second half began, much like the first, with Bergholt attacking and Felixstowe had to clear twice of their line. Felixstowe equalised after 53 minutes when Lamb lost possession and the Felixstowe striker lobbed the advancing Hardingham.
Bergholt’s third goal and arguably the goal of the match came after Ballard had moved up front. He gathered the ball just outside the Felixstowe area, turned his man before smashing the ball to the top right corner of the goal. An indication that, perhaps, he should play there more often. Both sides had further scoring opportunities. Sound defending by Lamb prevented Felixstowe capitalising on theirs. Another win for Bergholt but again not an inspired performance.

Under 15's Sunday 22nd April 2007
East Bergholt 5 Brandon Lads 4
It’s not easy watching the U15’s - you can go from joy to despair in a matter of moments. This was always going to be a hard game, not h
elped by players absent due to both injuries (Vincent, Sherwood) and Norwich vs Ipswich (Ager, Stone). Bergholt dominated the early stages of the game but it wasn’t until 26 minutes that they took the lead when Sparrow beat the Brandon defence to coolly slot the ball into the net. In the next ten minutes Bergholt really should have scored three more but a series superb saves by Mills, the Brandon keeper for the day, kept Bergholt at bay. Bergholt also hit the bar from an Eales header before Mills somehow go his hand to a goal bound shot by Hanley. Just before half time Bergholt were awarded a free kick just outside the Brandon area but Willcox’s effort hit the wall, the ball was cleared downfield and Fisher latched onto the ball to equalise. Within five minutes of the second half Andrews followed up on an Aalders shot to net from six yards. Brandon attacked from the restart and an innocuous shot caught Hall off guard and the ball ended up in the goal. On 50 minutes Nugent and Bedinfield, in the Bergholt defence, combined to give Brandon the lead. With Colbeck off injured and no subs available Bergholt had to play the remainder of the game with ten men. Another long ball from Brandon saw them make it four when Weekes cleverly lobbed the ball past the approaching Hall. Brandon defended in depth and Bergholt’s delivery into the box was poor. Andrews reduced the deficient after beating three Brandon defenders to fire home. With time running Bergholt continued to push forward and they equalised on 36 minutes when Nugent’s 30 yard shot found the top corner of the net. Two minutes latter Bergholt regained the lead when Mills failed to hold an Andrews corner and from the resulting melee Nugent scored from close range to secure a vital three points. Final score 5-4 and somehow Bergholt had snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

Under 15's Sunday 15th April 2007
East Bergholt 10 Moreton Hall 4
There was a goal feast at Flatford Lane as Bergholt made double figures - the last time was in October 2004, also against Moreton Hall.
Bergholt dominated the early game and came close to scoring when Willcox's shot hit the post. However the ball was gathered by the Moreton Hall keeper and the resulting clearance was knocked over the approaching Stone by a Moreton striker to go one up. Two minutes later Bergholt equalised when Andrews converted a Nugent cross. On 22 minutes Andrews scored his second when his 20 yards shot found the bottom corner of the net with the Moreton keeper watching. Eales made it 3-1 when he headed in a long throw from Thomson. Just before half time Thomson made in 4-1. The second half started with a spate of goals. On 42 minutes Willcox scored from 30 yards and within seconds Moreton Hall had got a goal back when the Bergholt defence failed to make a tackle. One minute later the Moreton keeper mishandled a shot and Sparrow dispatched the loose ball into the goal. After 47 minutes Thomson's header was deflected to make it seven. The visitors got a goal back when a long ball beat the Bergholt defenders leaving the Moreton striker to score from six yards. On 68 minutes Eales scored his second after hard work by Andrews. Two minutes later Sparrow's cross was headed home by Nugent followed shortly by Sparrow scoring from an Aalders cross. Moreton Hall didn't give up and scored their fourth in the 76th minute.

Under 13's Friday 13th April 2007
Brantham 2 East Bergholt 1
A large crowd saw Brantham run out winners in this local derby. Bergholt's run of poor form continued with this third defeat in a row. Brantham were always the more determined side but for large periods Bergholt dominated but were unable to break the Brantham defence. Just before half time Brantham took the lead when the Begholt defence failed to close down the Brantham striker whose shoot from the edge of the area found the back of the net. Despite prolonged pressure in the second half Bergholt couldn't score and eventually equalised when a 20 yard 'shot' from Trott found the top corner of the goal. Bergholt should really have gone on and won the game but in the last few minutes their defence was once again exposed and Brantham were back in the lead. Of the Bergholt team Barwick never gave up, however he was often on a hopeless cause due to lack of support. Warren Campbell played well and showed that he deserves to be a regular starter. Of the others the midfield weren't in the game, the forwards didn't look like scoring and the defence lacked pace.

Under 15’s Sunday 8th April 2007
East Bergholt
2 Melton St Audrys 1
The crowd, bathed in the Easter sun, saw Bergholt maintain their title hopes with this win against fellow contenders Melton.
Having played each other the two previous weekends both sides were aware of each others strengths and weaknesses and so scoring chances were few and far between in the early stages of the game. A Thomson shot saw the Melton keeper making a first rate save before getting a hand to Willcox’s follow up. After 20 minutes Sparrow broke the deadlock when he rounded the Melton keeper and knocked the ball into the back of the net. Melton nearly equalised just before half time but Stone was able to push the goal bound free kick over the bar. In the dying seconds of the half a poor clearance by the Melton keeper was punished by Sparrow who made no mistake in scoring his second of the game. In the second half Melton piled on the pressure but Bergholt looked dangerous on the counter attack. Thomson was unlucky not to score from an acute angle but a Melton defender was on hand to clear the ball. After 65 minutes Melton got a goal back when their striker broke through the Bergholt defence before slotting the ball home past the approaching Stone. Melton had several further opportunities to equalise and, at one point, managed to miss the open Bergholt goal from six yards. The next time these two teams meet will be in the KO Cup Final. Let’s hope for a similar result.

Under 15's Sunday 1st April 2007 (Open Cup Semi-final)
East Bergholt 3 Melton St Audrys 5 (aet)
The second of the Melton series of games saw Bergholt, once again, come second best but with a much better performance than last week.
Bergholt again started well and went one up after 8 minutes when Sparrow’s header, from a Willcox cross, found the back of the net. Ten minutes later Melton equalized when a low shot, from just inside the penalty area, beat Vincent and Stone. On 28 minutes Sparrow neatly chipped the Melton keeper for Bergholt to retake the lead but this didn’t last long with a Melton forward easily scoring from six yards with the Bergholt defence asleep. Just before half time Melton took the lead when a free kick was not cleared and Melton were the quicker to the ball. The second half started in a similar fashion to the first with both sides pushing forwards. Melton thought that they had increased their lead when a free kick, deep within their own half, bounced over Stone into the Bergholt goal. Fortunately for Bergholt the kick was awarded for off side and so was indirect. Sparrow completed his hat trick after 54 minutes with a superb strike that found the top corner of the Melton net. With just under 10 minutes remaining Melton were awarded a penalty. Stone had little difficulty saving the poorly taken penalty. With extra time looming both teams were desperate to score but it was not to be. Both teams were tired and it was likely that the first team to make a mistake would be punished. With time running out in the first half of extra time Melton neatly control the ball from a cross from the right, turned a Bergholt defender, and slammed the ball home. Victory was sealed for Melton when they scored from a free kick in a virtually identical position to last week’s winner. This time Stone caught the ball but failed to hold onto it and Melton were 5-3 up. Good luck to Melton in the Open Cup Final. Bergholt’s performance a big improvement on last week but they must work harder and show more commitment in the next two games

Under 15's Sunday 25th March 2007
Melton St Audrys 3 East Bergholt 2
Melton deservedly won this encounter, the first of four in the next few weeks between these two teams.
Bergholt started the stronger and after five minutes were one up when Nugent connected with a cross from the right to beat the Melton keeper. Minutes later Melton were unlucky not to score when a cross hit the top of the bar. However they did equalise from a corner when the shot from the far post found a gap between Stone and the post. Both sides had further chances to score but after 25 minutes the Bergholt back three were exposed and Melton coolly scored from the edge of the six yard box. Just before half time Willcox’s header from a Hanley cross found the back of the Melton net. The second half saw Melton pile on the pressure. They took the lead when a free kick was hit into the top corner of the net, with Bergholt defending too deeply. Melton continued to dominate and had a goal disallowed for pushing. The Melton keeper wasn’t troubled in the second half having just two shots to save. Bergholt can only improve for the future games.

Under 13's Saturday 24th March 2007
Ipswich Royals 2 East Bergholt 4
On this bitterly cold day Bergholt came away with all the points despite a lacklustre performance.
Royals started the first half with the advantage of the wind but couldn’t capitalise on it. The majority of the first half appeared to be a competition to see who could see knock the ball out the most often. The break came after 20 minutes when Welham broke free but the Royals keeper was quickly out of his area to bundle the ball for a corner. From the resulting corner Welham whipped the ball to the far post for Barwick to head home. Bergholt had further opportunities to extend their lead but Bower and Bambridge failed to take advantage of them. In the second half Bergholt were with the wind but only Welham looked dangerous up front. Bergholt were often second to the ball and there was no communication between playersl. It was only in the last ten minutes that the pace picked up and Trott’s cross beat the keeper and left Bambridge with an easy strike to make it 2-0. Minutes later the Bergholt defence fell asleep when a Royal’s freekick, from the edge of the box, hit the bar and from the rebound a Royals forward knocked it into the Bergholt goal. Welham restored Bergholt’s two goal lead when his initial shot was parried by the Royal’s keeper but his follow up shot found the back of the net. Ipswich Royals didn’t give up and were soon back in the game after an atrocious mix up between Hardingham and Grover allowed Royals to score. In the dying minutes Trott chased a long ball and was able to slot it pass the approaching keeper to make it 4-2. Not one of the best matches to watch bit it still leaves Bergholt with a mathematical possibility of retaining the league title.

Under 15's Sunday 11th March 2007
Sicklesmere 3 East Bergholt 4
Bergholt’s victory over Sicklesmere sees them into the final of the KO Cup for the second year running. Bergholt dominated most of the game with Sicklesmere relying on long balls for their forwards to run onto. It was one of these attacks which saw Sicklesmere take the lead, after 20 minutes, when a cross from the left resulted in a relatively easy header for their No 8. Five minutes later Bergholt equalised when Aalders strength enabled him to beat a defender and strike the ball home from the edge of the box with the Sicklesmere keeper routed to the spot. Bergholt thought they had taken the lead from a corner but Aalders was ruled offside. In the first few minutes of the second half Ager prevented Sicklesmere from scoring when he cleared off the line with Stone beaten. However Sicklesmere regained the lead when they converted a penalty given for hand ball. This spurred on Bergholt and a long ball from Stone saw Thomson knock it past the Sicklesmere keeper and into the net. Hanley was brought down in the box and duly scored from the penalty to give Bergholt the lead. Bergholt’s fourth resulted from a determined Aalders gathering the ball in the Sicklesmere area and setting Thomson up to score his second of the game. Bergholt really should have killed off this cup tie but the Sicklesmere No 8 had different ideas and scored from an acute angle. This resulted in an exciting last few minutes but Bergholt were not going to let their lead slip.

Under 13's Saturday 24th February
Sizewell 1 East Bergholt 2
East Bergholt advanced into the semi finals with a narrow 2-1 away win. Sizewell were unfortunately in the opening minutes when their goalkeeper was injured, so they had to play the remainder of the game with a substitute keeper. Bergholt started strongly with Welham hitting the post and shortly afterwards Bambridge shooting just wide. After 23 minutes poor defending by Bergholt, on the left, allowed the Sizewell forward to cross the ball for a simple tap in from the edge of the six yard box. Bergholt continued to pressurise but a combination of good Sizewell defending and poor distribution of the ball by Bergholt stopped them from testing the keeper. Sizewell were unlucky not to go two up following a breakaway but the shot was wide. Just before half time the Sizewell keeper made a brave save at the feet of Jones to maintain their lead. The second half saw chances at both ends with Barwick heading over the bar and desperate defending by Bergholt denied Sizewell scoring in a goalmouth scramble. Welham should have equalised when one on one with the Sizewell keeper but his shot was never goal bound. After 60 minutes Welham, on a breakaway, learnt from his early mistake to slot the ball past the Sizewell keeper. Five minutes later Bergholt had taken the lead when a Sizewell defender handled in the box and Welham scored from the resulting penalty. Right to the very end both sides could have added to the score sheet but Bergholt hung on for victory. Sizewell played well and should be congratulated on their performance.

Under 11's Saturday 24th February 2007
Bildeston Rangers A 1 East Bergholt A 3
East Bergholt A progressed into the semi final of the under 11’s cup with a well fought 3-1 away win on an extremely heavy pitch. Bergholt started strongly in their first match for four and had lady luck on their side when Alex Day’s cross slipped through the Rangers keeper’s fingers into the net. Bildeston battled their way back into the match as Bergholt relied on Jonathan McGrath to prevent and quick equaliser. Bergholt’s defence, not for the first time this season, decided not to play to the whistle allowing a goal mouth scramble that the Bildeston striker slotted home. Bildeston camped themselves in the muddy Bergholt half for the remainder of the half as Bergholt managed to hold. A productive team talk shock Bergholt into life and Bergholt controlled the second half with Bildeston looking dangerous on the counter attack. East Bergholt regained the lead via a lively Jack Elomaa with William Harris gaining the assist. With virtually the last kick of the match William Harris extended Bergholt’s lead as Bildeston failed to clear the ball in the muddy goal area.
Bergholt Man of the Match: - Jack Elomaa

Bildeston B 2 East Bergholt B
With several Players missing this friendly gave several squad players a chance in claiming a starting position for next weeks vital B league fixture. A busy Joe Arnold did his chances no harm and was first on the goal sheet for Bergholt. The Bergholt attacking four linked together well and with Lawrence McGrath & Leighton Ticcarone looking solid at the back it was no surprise when Isaac Keinzley gave Bergholt the second which was closely followed by Isaac’s second. Bergholt continued to play good football with Isaac Keinzley scoring his hat trick. Bildeston did not drop their heads and fought back with two quick goals but it was Bergholt who finished the scoring with Alex Biondi deservingly scoring Bergholt’s fifth.
Bergholt Man of the Match: - Alex Biondi

Under 15’s Sunday 18th February 2007
St Louis 0 East Bergholt 8
This game resulted in Bergholt’s biggest win of the season and only a series of fine saves by the St Louis keeper kept the score down to eight. Bergholt got off to a dream start when Nugent tapped in from close range after three minutes and they went further ahead after five minutes when Thomson latched onto Vincent’s pass to make it 2-0.  A minute later Nugent had scored his second and it looked like an easy win was on the cards. A corner in the fifteen minute saw Ager’s shot deflected past the St Louis keeper and into the net. Just before half time Thomson made it five after neat interplay with Aalders. The second half saw St Louis continue to work hard but with Bergholt having the better of the game. After fifty four minutes Bergholt had made it six when Thomson’s cross from the goal line was knocked by an unfortunate St Louis defender into his own goal. The St Louis offside trap worked well in the second half with the Bergholt forwards being caught and many occasions. However Sparrow’s shot from just inside the penalty area found the back of the next for Bergholt’s seventh. With five minutes remaining Nugent was brought down in the area and Hanley made no mistake from the penalty spot. In the remaining minutes Aalders was unlucky not to score when his shot hit the woodwork.

Under 13's Saturday 3rd February 2007
East Bergholt 5 Claydon 1
East Bergholt extended the points gap between second and third place in the league with this deserved victory over Claydon. Bergholt started the stronger and were rewarded after five minutes when Welham intercepted a poor clearance from a Claydon defender to score. A good passing move, reminiscent of Bergholt last season, finished with Armstrong putting the ball into the net to extend Bergholt’s lead. Claydon picked up their game but were unable to beat the Bergholt defence. After 25 minutes a clever through ball from Armstrong saw Welham clear, who knocked the ball past the Claydon keeper to make it 3-0. Both teams came close to scoring with Bergholt shooting just wide at one end and their keeper, Hardingham, quick off his line to force the Claydon striker wide at the other. Welham completed his hat trick, once again running onto a through from Armstrong. The second half saw a more determined Claydon but it was Bergholt who scored first when Welham provided Bambridge the chance to put the ball past the advancing keeper. Claydon continued to pressurise and came close to scoring when a corner was headed just wide. With 5 minutes remaining Ballard was caught in possession and the resulting cross saw Claydon score to make it 5-1.

Under 15’s Sunday 28th January 2007
Brandon Lads 2 East Bergholt 3
East Bergholt progressed into the semi-finals of the Knock Cup after a hard fought win over Brandon. The game was played in very blustery conditions and it was clear from the start that this would play a major role in determining the outcome of the game. Bergholt kicked off into the wind and the first chance fell to Andrews who put his shot wide. Brandon were making the most of the wind and a long clearance from their keeper saw the Bergholt defence struggle to mark Mills, the tall Brandon forward, who slotted the ball past Stone to make it 1-0. Brandon were unlucky not to make it 2-0 when a long range lob hit the bar. After 20 minutes, a neat passing move saw Sparrow equalise for Bergholt. Although Bergholt had the majority of the play they couldn’t find the net. To cope with the long through balls Bergholt switched to four at the back but were unable to stop Brandon regaining the lead when Fisher headed home a long range throw. In the second half Bergholt had the advantage of the wind and continued to pressurise Brandon who defended in depth. Bergholt thought they had equalised when Aalders pushed the ball over the goal line before a Brandon defender cleared but the goal was disallowed. The equaliser eventually game when Thomson gave the Brandon keeper no chance with a superb header from just inside the penalty area. Brandon still looked dangerous on the break away and it required a diving save from Stone to stop them from scoring. With extra time looming Bergholt brought on Eales and it was his corner that Nugent headed home to give Bergholt the lead and a place in the semis.

Under 11's Saturday 20th January 2007
Trimley Red Devils A 4 East Bergholt A 2
Again the battle of the 2 sides that have retained this age group’s title between themselves proved to be a first class battle with excellent football played by both teams. Bergholt received the perfect start when Trimley old boy Alex Day power scissor volleyed a Remi Daniels cross past Reece Wilcox. Bergholt continued to press but as so many times this season forgot how to defend, giving away a goal whilst on top. If Bergholt’s first goal was contender for goal of the season their second goal was a close second with Remi Daniels first time shot via a Alex Day cross field pass allowed Bergholt to restore their lead. Bergholt attempted to turn their possession into goals with Trimley always looking dangerous and again Trimley managed to pull level. Trimley upped their game in the second half and Bergholt relied on the counter attack. Bergholt looked sluggish as a lively Trimley attack took advantage to take the lead. Both sides had their chances to score but it was Trimley who managed to kill off the match, floating home a free kick as Bergholt defence still seemed bemused why it was given.
Bergholt Man of the Match: - Alex Day

Trimley Red Devils B 2 East Bergholt B 2
This was always going to be a damage limitation match for East Bergholt with two B team regulars playing in the A side and Isaac Keinzley not available. Alex Biondi made up for the missing personnel buzzing around the pitch and it was no surprise when he gave Bergholt the lead via a mazy dribble around 3 defenders. Trimley battled and deserved to level the score. Bergholt were awarded a harsh penalty as Alex Biondi’s goal bound effort struck the unfortunate defenders arm but Bergholt failed from the spot for the third time this season. Shortly after Trimley shocked Bergholt taking a 2-1 lead. Both sides had chances and with time running out Conner Robertson waltzed though to gain Bergholt a well deserved point.

Under 15's Sunday 7th January 2007
Harleston 1 East Bergholt 8
East Bergholt overcame a determined Harleston to reach the semi-finals of the Open Cup thanks, primarily, to their second half performance. On a heavy pitch, after the recent rain, Bergholt started the stronger but were unable to capitalize with the Harleston keeper in good form. After 15 minutes Sparrow scored the goal Bergholt deserved with a ground hugging shot from the edge of the area. Harleston looked dangerous on the breakaways and nearly equalized from an inswinging corner. Bergholt continued to pile on the pressure and came closest to scoring a second when a long range Willcox free kick hit the crossbar. At half time Bergholt were only leading by a single goal and it was clear that Harleston were still in contention. Within seconds of the restart a goal mouth scramble resulted in Harleston hitting the woodwork. This woke Bergholt up and Lee Willcox made it 2-0 when his 20 yard shot beat the Harleston keeper. Nugent’s footwork continued to cause problems to the Harleston defence and after a fine exhibition of ball control he set Lee Andrews up to make it 3-0. Sloppy defending saw Harleston grab a goal back when one of their forwards intercepted a back pass from Ager to the Bergholt keeper, Stone. The final fifteen minutes saw a flurry of Bergholt goals as the pitch took its toll on the Harleston energy. Aalders made it 4 – 0 with the Harleston defence appealing for offside.  Lee Andrews scored a well deserved second goal before both Aalders and Sparrow made it 7-1. In the dying seconds Aalders ran onto a through ball to knock it past the Harleston keeper to score his hat trick. Bergholt now face a home semi-final tie against league rivals Melton.

Under 11's Saturday 6th January 2007
East Bergholt A 1 Sutton Heath A 3
With conditions at Flatford Lane resembling a mud bath this was never going to be a pretty match and the players needed to show grit and determination as the heavens opened up. Sutton Heath commenced the game determined to win and fought for every ball and soon took a deserved lead. Sutton Heath defended in numbers and always looked strong on the attack. Bergholt forced several corners with a Remi Daniel cross deflecting off a defender into the net. After a team lifting talking at half time Bergholt commenced the second half totally dominating play, so much so that the poor keeper Ben McGrath was rooted to his goal line as Sutton Heath scored a simple second goal. Ben McGrath could play no further part in the match as Bergholt tried to fight their way back into the match for the second time. Sutton Heath completed the win from the penalty after Alex Hardwick picked the ball up in the penalty area thinking the ball had run out for a goal kick.
Bergholt Man of the Match: - Louis Clarke

East Bergholt B 1 Sutton Heath B 4
Akin to the A side, Sutton Heath showed more spirit and fight to win the match and be the first side ever to complete a double of East Bergholt within this age group.  Though Sutton Heath deserved the victory a 4-1 score line flattered them with Bergholt missing the same easy chances that Sutton Heath managed to score. Conner Robertson continued his scoring spree scoring a consolation goal after Sutton Heath had taken a 4-0 lead.

East Bergholt A 3 Brantham A 1
East Bergholt victory in this local derby allowed them to leapfrogged local neighbours from across the A137. Bergholt showed their intentions from the start with Remi Daniels hit the frame of the goal within ten seconds. Both sides were determined to take early control of the game with Ben McGrath saving from an Alex Hood header. George Foster double shot was saved by Alex Evans and an excellently timed tackle by Alex Hardwick prevent George Clarke a free ran on goal. Bergholt broke the deadlock in the seventeenth minute of the match when William Harris curled a Louis Clarke through ball past the Brantham keeper. Brantham responded by lifting their game and pulled level just prior to half time as an Alex Hood shot proved to powerful for Ben McGrath. A clearance off the line by Alex Hardwick prevented Brantham taking an early second half lead with Bergholt clearing the resulting corner. William Harris goal bound effort was well saved by Alex Evans, being also alert saving at the feet of Jack Elomaa after he battled through three defenders. Seconds later Jack Elomaa made no mistake slotting home a George Foster corner. An injury to Jack Elomaa seem to disrupt Bergholt as they seem all at sea as Brantham surged forward trying to force their way back into the game but with his first touch of the game Isaac Keinzley gave fellow substitute a simple tap in for Bergholt to extend their lead and clinch this important victory.

East Bergholt B 3 Brantham B 2
East Bergholt B gave their Manager the perfect Christmas present as they continued the winning run to keep in touch with the league leaders. An early goal by Connor Robertson gave Bergholt the perfect start and they should have extended the lead after a pin ball wizard effect saw four players having shots cleared off the line. Bergholt looked in total control but forgot that you still have to defend and in the eighth minute Brantham pulled level. The goal lifted Brantham putting Bergholt on the back foot with Jonathan McGrath saving Bergholt on two occasions. Brantham took a deserved lead in the eighteenth minute but were still celebrating as Alex Biondi waltzed through to allow Connor Robertson to follow up a parried shot for his second of the match. Substitutions and changes disrupted the second half with both teams struggling to play the flowing football they both played in the first. Bergholt had to wait until late in the half when Isaac Keinzley finished of a goalmouth scramble to give Bergholt the three points.

East Bergholt 1 St. Johns 2 (Open Cup)
East Bergholt under 10’s can walk away from this game with their heads held high after losing to one of the top FDL sides in the under 10’s section with an extra time winner. Joe Keinzley joined the Bergholt squad made up of only 3 regulars in the East Bergholt under 11’s team along with Elliot Adams & Bradley Orton playing their first ever game of competitive football. St. Johns started stronger and Bergholt had to rely on Ben McGrath to save them on several occasions. Bergholt counter attacked on several occasions with George Foster & Alex Biondi both having efforts saved in a closely thought first half. The second half was similar to the first with St. Johns winning the possession with Bergholt always looking dangerous on the counter attack. Midway through the second half Joe Arnold finished an Alex Biondi through ball to silent the St. Johns crowd. St. Johns forced the game into the Bergholt penalty box and despite excellent defending by the Bergholt defence, St. Johns pulled level to take the game into extra time. A stalemate first period of extra time and tiring players the game looked destined for a penalty shot, but with time running out a St. Johns free kick was deflected into the path of a Saints player who managed to steer the ball past an advancing Ben McGrath.

East Bergholt A 0 Woodbridge B 2
Any chance of East Bergholt retaining the title this season is disappearing fast as Woodbridge ran out 2-0 winners in a close fairly competitive match. Both sides attempted to play good football on a sticky pitch with East Bergholt having the slight possession advantage in the first half, with William Harris, George Foster and Remi Daniel all coming close to breaking the deadlock. Woodbridge were not short of chances with Ben McGrath and the woodwork saving Bergholt on two occasions. Woodbridge broke the deadlock early in the second half with an excellent cross from the Woodbridge attacker finding his team mate alone at the back post. Both sides continued to serge forward but Bergholt’s finishing lacked any power or accuracy with Stephen Cole coming closes with his effort skimming the crossbar. The Woodpeckers central midfielder was on top form dancing around several Bergholt players prior to shooting wide. As Bergholt pushed forward in search of an equaliser, Woodbridge secured their victory as Bergholt left gaps at the back with practically the last kick of the match.

East Bergholt B 8 Woodbridge B 1
East Bergholt B continued their excellent form with an 8-1 victory against Woodbridge Town. Alex Day commenced the scoring in the tenth minute with Connor Robertson making it 2-0 minutes later. The Woodbridge keeper was in fine form to stop Isaac Keinzley but could do little as the same player scored Bergholt’s third just prior to half time. Woodbridge struggled to stop the Bergholt attack with sub Lewis Knights gaining his first of the match just after half time. Woodbridge counter attacked to pull 1 back shortly after the Woodbridge keeper had stood firm to save an Alex Biondi penalty. Bergholt soon returned to their fluent football with Lewis Knights and Isaac Keinzley both scoring to extend Bergholt’s lead. With time running out Lewis Knights ran on to a long through ball for a second half hat trick and Connor Robertson finished the scoring just prior to the full time whistle.

East Bergholt 4 Stow Falcons 2
With no games and training over the last five weeks, second division Stow Falcons must has thought that they could beat Bergholt, especially as the home team could only manage to field ten players due to injuries, suspension and general apathy. However Bergholt started the stronger and after ten minutes a through ball from Andrews saw Sparrow shoot past the visitors’ keeper to make it 1-0. Stow didn’t give up and shortly afterwards had equalised after the Bergholt defence, afraid of tackling in the penalty area, allowed Offord to slip past the defenders to make it 1-1. Stow continued the pressure and should have taken the lead but the shot from six yards hit the bar. This woke Bergholt up and they dominated the remainder of the first half with Lee Andrews chipping the keeper after twenty two minutes to make it 2-1. Bergholt should have scored several more but it wasn’t until thirty five minutes that Sparrow scored his second and Bergholt’s third. With just two minutes remaining in the first half Frost connected with an Andrews free kick to make it 4-1 at half time. The second half started as the first with Bergholt pushing up but unable to score and Stow looking dangerous on the breakaways. With Stone beaten Ager had to clear off the Bergholt line to maintain the three goal advantage. At the other end Andrews was unlucky not to score when his shot hit the bar and the ball agonisingly rebounded off the Stow keeper towards the goal but a Stow defender just managed to clear his line. Stow never gave up and in the seventy fourth minute their efforts were rewarded when Dawes headed home from a free kick with the Bergholt players routed to the spot; the defence/midfield expecting Stone to come while he expected the outfield players to follow the attacker. Although ten men Bergholt were tired they held on to progress to the next round of the knockout cup, away to Brandon.

East Bergholt 5 Martlesham Mustangs 2
Unfortunately the wind and a slippery pitch made football difficult with both teams struggling to make any real impact in this match. In a slow opening period the game had to wait until the eighth minute for its first shot on target that was dealt with by Ben McGrath. William Harris produced Bergholt’s first effort but his shot lacked power. After 16 minutes, George Foster commenced a move with William Harris laying off for Remi Daniel to slot past the keeper. This woke up Bergholt and they bombarded the Mustangs goal with both William Harris & George Foster having shots saved. William Harris went solo after 19 minutes for Bergholt’s second. Mustangs forced Bergholt back and just prior to half time
Laurence Portaluri battled his way into the box with Ben McGrath only being able to parry the shot into the net. Five minutes into the second half William Harris blasted a shot that cannoned off the bar into the net for Bergholt to extend their lead and four minutes later Alex Hardwick screamed a shot past the Mustangs defence after a William Harris lay off. Mustang’s heads did not drop as the game swung from end to end and midway through the second half Martlesham reduced the arrears shooting past sub keeper Jonathan McGrath. Jonathan was alert to stop a Martlesham comeback on two occasions and with time running out a persistent Alex Hardwick scored his second and Bergholt’s fifth of the match to secure a Bergholt victory.

East Bergholt 2 Martlesham Mustangs 1
Bergholt struggled against the wind to make any progress at the start of this match as Martlesham Mustangs totally dominated the early stages. Dominic Barker came to Bergholt’s rescue on several occasions but could only stand and watch as a long distance effort flew past into the net in the tenth minute of the match. Bergholt attempted to play football against the wind and Conner Robertson’s shot was well saved. A quick counter attack by Bergholt saw Isaac Keinzley latch on to an Alex Day through ball to allow Bergholt to go into the break level. A wind assisted Bergholt throw everyone forward in the second half with often route 1 football being the best option. Alex Day was on a mission trying his luck from long range with his powerful shots flying wide on three occasions. The Mustangs keeper saved superbly after a goal mouth scramble with efforts from Joe Arnold, Alex Day and Isaac Keinzley all failing to hit the back of the net. Midway through the second half an Alex Day corner swung straight into the net to give Bergholt the advantage in this tight match. Mustangs did not give up and Bergholt had to rely on sub keeper Lawrence McGrath to superbly tipping over a Mustangs effort in the dying minutes of this match.

East Bergholt A 2 Woodbridge Town A 0
East Bergholt progressed into the third round of the cup with a 2-0 win against a previously unbeaten Woodbridge Town. Though the game started slowly with passes going astray by both side East Bergholt received the perfect lift in the third minute with Jack Elomaa poaching his first of the season via a George Foster corner. Woodbridge shot wide trying to force a quick return in to the match whilst at the other end William Harris battled through only to see he goal bound effort well saved. The Woodbridge keeper was alert again to save from Jack Elomaa when he looked destined to score. Just prior to half time Bergholt received a bitter blow when William Harris had to leave the field after an accidental clash of heads but every cloud has a silver lining and sub Alex Day scored with his first touch from a Remi Daniels cross. Woodbridge commenced the second half bombarding the Bergholt goal with Ben McGrath saving on two occasions. Bergholt relied on the counter attack and Jack Elomaa was unlucky not to extend Bergholt’s lead. Alex Hardwick's shot was deflected wide after an excellent lay off by Alex Day. The game swung from end to end with Ben McGrath coming to Bergholt’s rescue again and George Foster’s corner cannoned against the post. With time running out Bergholt missed a golden chance to extend their lead when Louis Clarke missed from the penalty spot and in the final minute Alex Hardwick shot wide after an Alex Biondi pull back.

East Bergholt A 1 Felixstowe Hawks 0
East Bergholt A continued their winning run with a 1-0 win at home to a determined Felixstowe Hawks side. Bergholt played excellent football in a first half. They totally dominated but again their lack of being able to kill off opponents nearly proved costly. William Harris headed wide following an excellent build up on Bergholt’s right by Remi Daniel & Jack Elomaa. Remi was supplier again as Stephen Cole’s header cannoned against the post. Remi Daniel’s found space on the right but his effort flew wide of the near post when a cross the far post,  with 3 Bergholt strikers flying in, may have been a better choice. Bergholt camped themselves in the Felixstowe half and a William Harris goal bound effort was saved by the excellent Hawks keeper. Ben McGrath proved he was wide awake despite not touching the ball by tipping a thunderous shot, aiming for the corner of the goal, over the bar. This lifted the Hawks with the corner hitting the post and crawling along the line prior to Bergholt’s defence clearing the ball. Jack Elomaa and the Bergholt crowd thought he had broken the deadlock but the Referee’s whistle had broken and play had been stopped for handball. Jack Elomaa tried to make amends but the Felixstowe keeper was equal to Jack. Three minutes prior to the break, Stephen Cole changed the direction of a George Foster shot to give Bergholt the lead. The Hawks came out in the second half determined to make a fight of this match and a speedy counter attack in the first minute drifted just wide. The Hawks keeper produced the save of the day from a half volley by Jack Elomaa and Stephen Cole volley just wide seconds later. Alex Hardwick rescued Bergholt with an excellent tackle on the Hawks striker and the resulting corner was headed just wide. The second half swung from end to end and the Hawks keeper saved at the feet of Jack Elomaa when Jack looked destined to score, but Bergholt had to rely on Alex Hardwick in injury time for a last ditch tackle just as the Hawks strike was about to shot. A tackle that surely gave East Bergholt all 3 points, proving that a defender can win you points as well as strikers.

East Bergholt B 3 Felixstowe Hawks 3
Current champions East Bergholt B played hosts to current league leaders Felixstowe Hawks in a game that both sides may look at the result as 2 points lost rather than 1 gained. Bergholt started the stronger with Conner Robertson’s strike hitting the post with Isaac Keinzley failing to score with the follow up. An Alex Biondi header flew wide from an Alex Day corner and tackle on Conner Robertson prevented Bergholt taking the lead. Bergholt took a deserved lead after 10 minutes when Alex Biondi battled through 3 Hawk players to allow Conner Robertson an easy shot in from close range. Dominic Barker saved well at the feet of the Hawks strike. The Hawks soon pulled level after the Bergholt players forgot that once you kick the ball back from a drop ball you have to actually defend. Bergholt quickly surged forward and a shot by Conner Robertson was bundled in by Isaac Keinzley. Against the wind the Hawks looked the stronger in the second half and Bergholt had to rely on counter attacks. 13 minutes into the second half Felixstowe Hawks pulled level for the second time and looked like they would steal the points scores their third in the twentieth minute. Alex Day blasting over from the edge of the box as Bergholt threw every thing forward, and in the final minute a forward surge by Leighton Ticcarone found Conner Robertson for his second of the match to give Bergholt a share of the points.

Felixstowe & Walton A 0 East Bergholt A 3
A hat trick by William Harris gave East Bergholt a deserved victory in a game they could easily have thrown away if Sam Newman had been in the sort of form that has seen him destroy many sides previously. A saving tackle by Felixstowe’s last defender prevented Jack Elomaa giving Bergholt a deserved lead after an excellent through ball by Alex Hardwick and the excellent Walton defender performed the same routine when Jack broke clear and looked destine to score minutes later. Bergholt dominated possession but seem to have lost their ruthless streak in front of goal with shots flying wide or lacking power on many occasions. William Harris gave Bergholt the lead when his shoot from the edge of the box eluded everyone in the crowded box to creep in off the post as the unfortunate keeper tried to scope the ball off the line. Felixstowe & Walton slowly started to gain more of the possession and Sam Newman should have giving Felixstowe the lead early in the second half shooting over after beating Bergholt’s last defender. Sam broke through on 2 other occasions with the same end result as Bergholt’s defence played a dangerous game of leaving one on one. With time running out William Harris slotted home his second from a George Forster corner and gained his hat trick in injury time in a excellent move with Stephen Cole pulling the ball back from the by line to allow William Harris a simple tap in.
Bergholt Man of the Match: - William Harris.

Felixstowe & Walton B 1 East Bergholt B 2
An early brace by Alex Biondi was sufficient to give East Bergholt 3 valuable points as Bergholt continued to keep in touch with the B league leaders. A brilliant volley in the second minute by Alex Biondi following an excellent build up involving Isaac Keinzley & Conner Robertson gave East Bergholt the lead. Bergholt extended their lead minutes later when Alex Biondi got the final touch in a goalmouth scramble. Rather then build on Bergholt’s amazing start, Bergholt players started to ran with the ball trying to beat several players instead of the pass and move football that had giving them the early lead. Felixstowe forced Bergholt into their own half and pulled a goal back just prior to half time. In a quiet second period no further goals were scored though Conner Robertson was unlucky to see his shot skim the bar & an superb save by the Felixstowe keeper prevented Louis Clarke scoring a long range effort. In the dying minutes Joe Arnold could have extended Bergholt’s lead blasting over when clear on goal.

Needham 3 East Bergholt 5
Bergholt were victorious in this hard fought game which was marred by poor refereeing. The visitors started the strongest but were unable to capitalise on the pressure. However, after 25 minutes Thomson was on the end of a Willcox cross to put the ball neatly past Siggers, the Needham keeper, to make it 1-0 to Bergholt. Minutes later Needham had equalised when all the players had stopped for offside, only to see the referee wave play on. After a clash of heads Thomson had to be replaced by Aalders. Within minutes of coming on Aalders had scored from a Lee Andrews pass and a lack of communication between Siggers and a defender resulted in Aalders knocking in his second. Andrews, sandwiched between two Needham forwards, was adjudged to have committed a foul for reasons that surely only the official himself had knowledge of. The resulting free kick, from just outside the Bergholt penalty area, saw Needham pull one back when the ball was struck under the jumping Bergholt wall and out of reach of Stone. Just before half time Ager cleared off the Bergholt line maintain their one goal advantage. Bergholt started the second half strongly and Alders determination to score his hat trick was rewarded when he slotted the ball into the Needham net. Needham didn’t give up and continued to pile on the pressure, taking advantage of the referee’s interpretation of the laws of the game. A number of substitutions saw Bergholt stronger upfront but more exposed at the back. Whilst the Bergholt defence battled hard there became an increasing sense that if Needham threw enough at it, they would at some point break through. This came when a poor clearance from Ager saw Needham knock home the loose ball to make it 4-3. With virtually the last kick of the game another error by Siggers saw Sparrow, shooting into an undefeated net to score, perhaps, the most deserved goal of the match.

East Bergholt 4  St Louis 1
Against a team that has yet to record a win this season Bergholt struggled to find the net despite dominating the game. Bergholt started the game determined to gain an early advantage but it was not until 15 minutes that Thomson knocked the ball, from a Willcox cross, beyond the St Louis keeper. Nugent, beginning as full back, found plenty of space down the left but Bergholt were unable to capitalise in front of gaol; Sparrow coming the closest with a header from a Nugent cross that just shaved the post. Just before half time Bergholt doubled their lead with Willcox shooting powerfully into the corner of the net from 20 yards. At the start of the second half Andrews came close to scoring when his shot hit the bar. St Louis didn’t let their heads drop and were rewarded when a free kick from the edge of the area hit the post and their striker was first to the rebound to score. Bergholt continued to impose themselves on their opponents and dominated the midfield. With fifteen minutes remaining Nugent played an incisive ball through to Sparrow who struck a powerful shot, defeating the St Louis keeper and ending up in the next. Andrews came close to making it four when his shot, this time from long range, hit the St Louis crossbar. Bergholt didn’t give up and right at the end Willcox’s cross found Nugent rising above everyone else to nod in from two yards for Bergholt’s fourth.

East Bergholt A 3 St Johns A 2
East Bergholt gained three valuable points in a five goal thriller that could have ended with either side worthy winners. East Bergholt struggled to settle with several players playing in new positions that they did not like and had to rely on Ben McGrath saving Bergholt on several occasions in the opening five minutes. St. Johns punished Bergholt’s slow start in the 8th minute giving Ben McGrath no chance with a strike from the edge of the box. Stephen Cole tried to lift Bergholt but his shot went straight at the Saints keeper. A quick reorganisation and Bergholt slowly started to gain territory and in the 11th minute William Harris equalised ghosting in at the far post from a Stephen Cole corner. William Harris nearly extended the lead shooting just wide via a Louis Clarke through ball. With half time approaching William Harris gave Bergholt a complete change to a half time chat by connecting to a Stephen Cole cross to give Bergholt a half time lead. Bergholt commenced the second half in the same fashion as the first with St. Johns bombarding the Bergholt goal and were soon on level terms when Woody stabbed the ball past Ben McGrath. Both teams tried to secure the win with Stephen Cole having a shot cleared off the line and Ben McGrath saved at the feet of the Saints attacker as the game switched from end to end, Stephen Cole scored the winner for Bergholt, finishing off a cross from Remi Daniel. St. Johns had chances to equalise with Alex Hardwick clearing off the line, but also have to thank their keeper for a miracle save from a volley by William Harris on the stroke of full time.

East Bergholt B 3 St Johns B 1
The battle between these to sides always produces great football and this game was no exception to the norm. Alex Biondi crossed but Conner Robertson just failed to connect whilst at the opposite end Jonathan McGrath saved well with the rebound being placed just wide. Isaac Keinzley gave Bergholt the lead in the 12th minute running from the edge of the box to slot past the advancing keeper. Bergholt went in search for a second with Alex Biondi skipping past two defenders only to see his shot tipped over. St. Johns shot over on two separate occasions as they tried to force their way back into the game. A long goal kick by Alex Day eluded the St. Johns defence to give Isaac Keinzley a simple second goal. The Saints keeper double save prevented Bergholt extending their lead and Jonathan McGrath was alert to prevent Harvey from pulling a goal back just prior to half time. St Johns commenced the second half camped in the Bergholt half with Harvey shooting just wide. A long through ball by Leighton Ticcarone and a miss control by Isaac Keinzley gave Joe Arnold a chance that flew wide. Alex Biondi had a shot cleared of the line as Bergholt counter attacked at every opportunity. Alex Day, on his debut, blasted home an Alex Biondi pass to extend Bergholt’s lead and the two Alex’s combined well again for Biondi to shot just wide. The Saints spent the last 10 minutes camped in the Bergholt area with Adam Magilton deservedly pulling a goal back for the Saints but good or lucky defending by Bergholt was good enough for Bergholt to maintain the two goal advantage.

Mildenhall 1 East Bergholt 3
East Bergholt made the long journey to Mildenhall and came away with a hard earned three points. The home side started the game well, winning the majority of the tackles. After ten minutes Mildenhall took advantage of some poor defending to take the lead when a cross from the right was knocked in. The home side looked likely to extend their lead as Bergholt continued to watch the ball. Ben Sparrow worked extremely hard upfront but was often left with no support.
Bergholt started the second half in a more determined mood. Within minutes shots by Willcox and Sparrow produced fine saves from the Mildenhall keeper. Thomson continued to play well, dominating the midfield. With fifteen minutes remaining Willcox saw the Mildenhall keeper off his line and beat him with a 30 yard shot. This gave Bergholt the incentive they needed and minutes later a long clearance from Sherwood found Vincent free on the right. He passed the ball onto Sparrow who cut the ball back from the goal line for Aalders to score. Bergholt continued their passing game and were rewarded right at the death with Thomson scoring a well deserved goal.

Kesgrave Kestrels A 1 East Bergholt A 2
East Bergholt progressed into the 2nd round of the Under 11’s Cup with a hard fought 2-1 win over Division 2 leaders Kesgrave Kestrels. George Foster tried his luck from the edge of the box but found the Kestrels keeper well alert. Ben McGrath in the Bergholt goal was equal when the Kesgrave Kestrels striker looked destined to score. Ben could do very little when Kesgrave took the lead in the 5th minute, with the Kesgrave striker shooting from an angle. William Harris failed to trouble the keeper with a shot from distance as Bergholt showed determination to fight their way back into this cup tie. A deflected shot by Alex Hardwick gave Bergholt an equaliser in the 12th minute. Both teams continued to attack with Jack Elomaa pulling his shot wide after an excellent turn. Just prior to half time Ben McGrath came to Bergholt’s rescue saving well with the follow up being placed over the bar. Kesgrave started the second half the strongest with their striker rattling the crossbar with the follow up being headed off the line by William Harris. A change of tactics by the Bergholt manager seemed to give Bergholt a lift with Alex Hardwick seeing two shots well saved in succession. The Kestrels keeper parried another shot by Alex Hardwick into the path of Lewis Knights but he could only place his shot into the side netting. William Harris made no mistake following up another saved shot from Alex Hardwick to give Bergholt a 2-1 lead. Bergholt tried to kill off the game with Lewis Knights hitting over when through and in the dying minutes Alex Hardwick crashed his shot against the upright.

Kesgrave Kestrels B 5 East Bergholt B 2
The first round of the B cup drew last seasons two finalists with the beaten finalists gaining revenge with a 5-2 win to see them through to round two. The game started evenly with Lawrence McGrath holding a cross from Kesgrave Kestrels and the Kestrels keeper saving at the feet of Joe Arnold. Kesgrave took control of the game in the 12th minute and totally took Bergholt apart for the rest of the half scoring 3 more goals. A discussion at half time and a complete switch about of players saw Bergholt make a fight of the second half with Louis Clarke pulling one back 4 minutes into the second half. Alex Biondi scored Bergholt’s second in the 8th minute as they bombarded the Kestrels goal. Bergholt left gaps at the back and found the pace of Isaac Keinzley coped well with the Kestrels counter attacks. Alex Biondi had a header cleared of the line and Conner Roberson hit the post as the Kestrels defence battled superbly to try to tame Bergholt. With time running out and every Bergholt player thrown forward, Kesgrave exaggerated the score with a well finished strike. Good luck to the Kestrels B side in this competition and hopefully they can go one step further than last season.

Bildeston Rangers A 4 East Bergholt A 4
East Bergholt A managed to salvage a point in a game that they seemed determined to throw away with poor defending and fancy flicks at inappropriate times. Bildeston won the first corner of the match but the striker’s header fell wide. Bergholt started to take control of the match with Stephen Cole dragging his shot wide after persistent work by Jack Elomaa. Remi Daniel’s excellent shot on the turn was well held by the impressive Rangers keeper. A double save by the same keeper from Stephen Cole & William Harris prevented Bergholt from taking the lead. George Foster scored direct from the resulting corner to give Bergholt a deserved lead. Bildeston replied after Stephen Cole’s fancy flick in a dangerous area gave the Bildeston strike a free run at goal. Bergholt carried on attacking with Stephen Cole scoring from close range via a Jack Elomaa attack. Bildeston answered again direct from a free kick on the edge of the box then took the lead just prior to half time when a poor back heel give Bildeston the chance to counter attack with the Bergholt defence nowhere to be seen. The Bergholt defence seem non existent as Bildeston commenced the second half with excellent passing football and only a poor finish prevented Rangers from extending their lead. Bildeston took advantage of the poor defending to extend their lead. Bergholt forced the game into the Bildeston half and reduced the arrears when a William Harris power drive, from the edge of the box, could not be held by the Rangers keeper. Ben McGrath saved well as gaps were left at the back as Bergholt tried to attack. With 4 minutes of play remaining William Harris tapped home from close range from a Stephen Cole cross to rescue a point.

Bildeston Rangers B 2 East Bergholt B 3
East Bergholt started lively with Isaac Keinzley shooting just wide from and Alex Biondi through ball. Dominic Barker saved after Bildeston had worked their way through the Bergholt defence. Bildeston took the lead in the 7th minute shooting from the edge of the box past the Bergholt keeper. Bergholt put pressure on the Rangers defence with successive corners with Conner Robertson heading over from close range. Conner Robertson equalised when he turned and shot via a Lewis Knights flick on. Isaac Keinzley hit the post and Lewis Knights shot just flew over the cross bar. Isaac Keinzley scored Bergholt’s second after a solo run then gained an assist for Conner Robertson as he scored his second minutes later. Just prior to half time Bildeston pulled a goal back when a goal bound effort deflected off the Bergholt defender and seconds later Bergholt were saved by Bildeston’s linesman when the strikers shot cannoned against the crossbar and bounced on the line with the lineman signalling no goal. In a quiet second half that was disrupted by substitutions no further goals were scored giving Bergholt a valuable win.

East Bergholt A 2 Witnesham Wasps A 3
Football doe not always give you the correct result but I am also sure Witnesham Wasps manager Julian will state that the Wasps came with a plan and went home with the points that mattered. Bergholt commenced the game camped in the Wasps area. A William Harris shot was well saved by the Wasps keeper Theo Sims. After 4 minutes, in their first attack, the Wasps took a shock lead after the Wasps attacker skipped past 2 tackles then his weak shot was pushed into his own net by Jonathan McGrath. Bergholt did not drop their heads and went all out attack to score the equaliser but found Theo in top form. Alex Hardwick’s shot was deflected into the arms of Theo Sims and when Jack Elomaa’s header managed to beat the Wasps net protector the ball cannoned against the post. Stephen Cole’s long distance lob bounced over the keeper but also over the net. Jonathan McGrath redeemed himself with a wonder save after spilling a shot at the feet of Sam Parnell. Remi Daniel had a shot tipped around the post followed by Stephen Cole shooting just wide after a build up involving all of the Bergholt outfield players. Theo was on hand to prevent Bergholt equalising again when Remi skipped past the last defender. Bergholt's luck changed from the resulting corner when the Wasps defender headed into his own net. Bergholt continued to play some excellent passing football in the second half. Alex Hardwick’s free kick was deflected wide prior to Theo saving again from a George Foster strike. Desperate defending by Witnesham prevented Bergholt from taking the lead and Bergholt piled on the pressure. Ten minutes into the second half Bergholt took a deserved lead when Jack Elomaa flicked on a Stephen Cole pass for Remi to slot home at the far post. Bergholt relief was short lived when Witnesham attacked straight form the kick off with Callum Dugdale shooting from distance past sub-keeper Ben McGrath. Theo saved again from Stephen Cole and Jack Elomaa’s bad luck continued when his header hit the woodwork again. Witnesham snatched a late winner in injury time when the Bergholt defence backed off for Callum to shot from distance again past Ben McGrath. Bergholt may not play as well as this and win many games this season but with all the good work we have to learn how to defend.

East Bergholt B 4 Witnesham Wasps B 0
East Bergholt B gained their first victory of the season over Witnesham Wasps B side. Bergholt received an early breakthrough when Alex Biondi mazy dribble set up Isaac Keinzley for the first of the match. Ethan O’Hara prevented Alex Biondi from extending the lead but could do little when Isaac Keinzley slotted past for Bergholt’s second following a through ball by Louis Clarke. Witnesham tried to respond when Morgan Boyles shot hit the cross bar. Ethan was out sharply to deny Alex Biondi again and was on hand with a double save to prevent Isaac Keinzley scoring a first half hat trick, with Elliot Jones hitting the follow up just wide. Alex Biondi gained another assist setting up Isaac Keinzley for his hat trick early in the second half. Witnesham tried to find their way back into the game with Josh Turmel shooting just wide. An Alex Biondi header was punched clear and the same player combined with Isaac Keinzley again with Isaac's shot being pushed just wide. Sub Joe Arnold combined with Lewis Knights for Bergholt’s fourth of the match. Though this was an excellent result Bergholt B have yet to return to their fluent passing football that aided them in winner the double last season.

Dubbed the Charity Shield of the Under 11’s, Champions East Bergholt received the perfect start in defence of their league title when an Alex Hardwick shot looped over last seasons Cup winners Sutton Heath’s keeper. The goal woke up Sutton as they piled on the pressure on the Bergholt goal shooting just wide. Jonathan McGrath saved and Alex Hardwick blocked the goal bound rebound to maintain the 1 goal advantage. William Harris headed just wide after the Heath’s keeper saved from Stephen Cole. Sutton Heath continued to win the midfield battle as Bergholt relied on counter attacks with Jonathan McGrath saving Bergholt again. Just prior to half time Stephen Cole shot just wide following a Lewis Knights cross. The second half continued as the first with Sutton Heath having the better of the possession. William Harris headed clear a free kick from the edge of the box. Ten minutes into the second half Jack Elomaa laid off for William Harris to score from the edge of the box. Within seconds Jack Elomaa hit the post as Bergholt went in search for more goals. Stephen Cole dragged his shot wide, when clear, as Sutton Heath left gaps at the back trying to pull themselves back into the game. A counter attack run by Alex Hardwick, with several interchanges with his team mates wrapped up the scoring for Bergholt though it took a great save by Jonathan McGrath within the dying seconds to keep a clean sheet.

Sutton Heath B 2 East Bergholt B 0
East Bergholt B commenced their defence of their B league title with a 2-0 defeat at the hands off Sutton Heath. Bergholt started lively with both Elliot Jones and Alex Biondi having shots saved. Bergholt had plenty of possession in this game but failed to make any real clear chances with players dibbling instead of passing. A shot from the edge of the box gave Sutton Heath B the lead after 6 minutes and they extended their lead midway through the second half. Bergholt B will have to find their team spirit of last season quickly if they are to repeat their double winning season. Both games were well refereed by the Sutton Referee and Sutton Heath were also the perfect hosts.
